Beth Cox Report: June/July 2017

Dear Loyal Readers, Authors, and Publishers,

It's quite surprising how popular the "Book Blog" and "Start Your Own Blog" section of the MBR website has become since its creation. It's at

http://www.midwestbookreview.com/links/bookblogs.htm

and I'd like to share two of the most recent additions to the "Start Your Own Blog" section as Links of the Month for June and July. They are Superb Website Builders

https://superbwebsitebuilders.com

and Web Hosting Buddy

https://webhostingbuddy.com

Both sites are dedicated to reviews and comparisons of web hosting and other services, and a therefore must-browse when starting up one's own website.

I'm emphasizing these links because the days when all a professional author had to worry about was finishing their next book are vanishing fast. Almost everyone in the publishing industry (including books, music, movies, games, and virtually any media) - indeed, anyone in business for themselves needs a good website of their own.

Why? Just off the top of my head:

1) A website makes it much easier for anyone interested in your work, whether a consumer or a publisher, to discover or contact you.

2) A professional-looking website makes it clear that you're serious about your books or your business.

3) Sales (or donations!) made through your website can become a valuable revenue stream.

Now for the June and July Books of the Month. The first is especially recommended for parents to share and discuss with their adolescent children, in the modern era of identity theft. Here at the MBR, we tend to get anywhere from 20 to 50+ phishing emails a day, trying to steal everything from our bank account to our nonexistent Apple ID.

The Young Adult's Guide to Identity Theft

Atlantic Publishing Group, Inc.

It's not a subject taught in high schools or colleges. Nevertheless, the sooner young men and women learn how to avoid identity theft, the better. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says that as many as one in every eight adults and one in every four households has been victimized by identity thieves in the past five years. To make matters even worse, if you end up a victim of identity theft, it can take years to clean up the mess. Being young is about starting a life and having opportunities, not dealing with scammers and identity theft. In the age of the Internet, fraud is a serious risk that we all face. "The Young Adult's Guide to Identity Theft: A Step-By-Step Guide to Stopping Scammers" provides the young adult reader with all of the information they need to stop these serious problems in a conversational, and sometimes humorous, tone. From teaching teens what identity fraud is to identifying the warning signs "The Young Adult's Guide to Identity Theft" shows what to look for when buying that anything online, including identifying which websites should not be trusted. "The Young Adult's Guide to Identity Theft" also provides a step-by-step guide to recovering one's identity in case it has actually been stolen. To avoid being a victim of identity theft, the first step needed to take is to arm ourselves with the knowledge contained in the pages of "The Young Adult's Guide to Identity Theft" to protect men and women of any age before it ever happens. An absolutely 'must' for highschool, community, college, and university library collections, it should be noted for the personal reading lists of students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that "The Young Adult's Guide to Identity Theft" is also available in a paperback edition (9781620231791, $19.95) and in a Kindle format ($13.42).

July's Book of the Month is a more scholarly title, yet it peers into the far-reaching impact of modern social media, specifically its use as a weapon in cyberwarfare:

Social Media Warfare
Michael Erbschloe
CRC Press
6000 NW Broken Sound Parkway NW, Suite 300, Boca Raton, FL 33487

9781138036024, $69.95, HC, 327pp, www.amazon.com

Social media applications can be weaponized with very little skill. Social media warfare has become a burden that nation states, government agencies, and corporations need to face. Michael Erbschloe has worked for over 30 years performing analysis of the economics of information technology, public policy relating to technology, and utilizing technology in reengineering organization processes. In "Social Media Warfare: Equal Weapons for All" he draws upon his decades of experience and expertise to address the social media warfare threat in a reasonable manner that reduces uncertainty requires dedication and attention over a very long-term. To stay secure, individuals, corporations, and governments need to develop the capability to defend against social media warfare attacks. "Social Media Warfare" addresses unconventional warfare strategies and tactics that takes time and experience, plus planning and dedication, to succeed. "Social Media Warfare" will help managers develop a sound understanding of how social media warfare can impact their nation or their organization. Enhanced with the inclusion of a fourteen page glossary of key terms, as well as a ten page index, "Social Media Warfare" is a comprehensive study that is unreservedly recommended for community, academic, and governmental library Cybersecurity/Cyberwarfare collections and supplemental studies reading lists. It should be noted for students and non-specialist general readers with an interest in the subject that "Social Media Warfare" is also available in a Kindle format ($55.96).

That's all for the June/July 2017 Beth Cox Report. Teaching your kids to stay safe online can potentially save them as much money as a college fund!
