Cabinets of Curiosities is packed with so many images it will appeal to art libraries as well, but is
recommended here for its special interest to collections appealing to collectors of oddities. It
documents the history and contents of the 'cabinets of curiosities' of the seventeenth century,
gathered by kings and scholars alike and ranging from actual cabinets to entire rooms of
curiosities and treasures from around the world. Not many of the actual rooms exist, but the
items which occupied them are housed in museums around the world - and Cabinets of
Curiosities covers their contents and history, pairing color photos of museum holdings with
discussions of how these cabinets evolved.
The Atheist's Guide to Reality
Alex Rosenberg
W.W. Norton
500 - 5th Avenue, New York NY 10110
9780393080230, $25.95, www.wwnorton.com
The Atheist's Guide to Reality: Enjoying Life Without Illusions isn't another book arguing
against religious beliefs, but a survey that provides a positive perspective for unbelievers who
want a blueprint for leading "the reality-driven life". Chapters offer perspectives of science as a
worldview, discuss the nature of reality and meaning in an atheist's life, and considers the deepest
questions religion addresses that science can also survey. The subtitle 'enjoying life' says it all -
and sets this apart from similar-sound - but very different - approaches to atheism and
meaning.
