Footwork: The Story of Fred and Adele Astaire is a children's picturebook biography of the early years of celebrated singer, dancer, and movie star Fred Astaire and his older sister Adele Astaire. When both siblings were young, they had to work hard learning to dance and perform for vaudeville theater; the money they brought in helped support their family, and in hard times dinner might be no more than a single egg split between the two of them. In their youth, Adele was recognized as the better performer when both were children; Fred labored to match her natural talent, and honed his creativity inventing new acts to perform. They grew up together, and when Adele chose to get married and retire from dancing, Fred faced a whole new challenge - he'd almost always performed with her before; now he had to face the stage by himself. He dared to venture to Hollywood, and so began his legendary film career. The illustrations are upbeat without making light of the hard times of the Great Depression, and the text of Footwork is just involved enough to be suitable for young readers who are almost ready to move on to chapter books. Highly recommended.

The Magic In You! is a softcover children's picturebook about the importance of a healthy self-image. A little wildflower growing by the side of the road feels unloved, mocked as she is by her fellow flowers. A billy goat eats one of her petals, and a careless driver runs over her leaf, deepening her misery. She asks a fairy to magically make her beautiful again; the fairy replies, "You do not need my magic to become beautiful or happy. You can become a beautiful, happy little flower any time you want." The little flower is mystified at first, but she gradually learns the truth, as her injuries allow her to shelter a butterfly and a ladybug in need. When she forgives the billy goat who harmed her, he feels sorry for his misdeed and becomes her friend. Despite her injured outer appearance, she learns that becoming happy and truly beautiful depends the most on how one is like inside. Adventures of Countess Pigula: "Her Royal Imagination" is a picturebook intended for young readers in grades K-3, about taking proper care of a pet guinea pig. Though the title guinea pig Countess Pigula is slightly anthropomorphized, her regular routines from feeding time to bath time to toenail trimming are all standard tasks guinea pig owners need to perform, though related in the snooty tone of a noble receiving proper tribute from her "subjects". "When it is time to clean her lovely cage of blue, she will want the best above the rest. No ordinary bedding will do. 'Nice job! Ahh! There is nothing like the smell of fresh pine bedding. It is my favorite you know. Now, don't forget. I insist my bedding must be at least three inches deep. Anything less just will not do.'" The final page spells out responsibilities and rewards of being a guinea pig pet owner. A "must-have" for any young person considering a pet guinea pig of their own.

Endorsed by the "Biodiesel Coalition", among other eco-friendly groups, Cool Cat Goes Biodiesl is the latest softcover picturebook in the "Cool Cat" series. Featuring bilingual text in both English and Spanish, Cool Cat Goes Biodiesel follows Cool Cat and his family as their car runs out of gas during a country drive. Cool Cat's dad manages to push the car to a gasoline station, but the prices there are terribly expensive - what are the cats to do? Fortunately, one of the pumps offers biodiesel fuel. Celebrity Willie Nelson teaches the Cool Cat family that biodiesel fuel, which is made by mixing soybean oil with diesel, can be used in any engine that accepts diesel fuel. Biodiesel also burns much cleaner than gasoline, and breathing it is easier on the lungs and heart than breathing gasoline. Also, the soybeans that contribute to biodiesel are grown by American farmers, so driving cars that have biodiesel engines helps to promote economic self-sufficiency. The cheerful color illustrations add the perfect touch to this enthusiastically pro-biodiesel picturebook.

The Wild Tales of a Curious Princess is a chapter book for young adults about thirteen-year-old Princess Penelope, who wants more than anything to be a physicist and go on grand adventures. This doesn't sit well in Fairyland, where there are strongly understood rules concerning how princess should behave - such as always waiting for a prince to rescue them when taken captive, rather than rescue themselves. When Master Chemist Silas the Almost-Great kidnaps Penelope and takes her to his castle, Penelope uses all her knowledge of physics and her "Damsel in Distress Textbook" to elude evil chemists, cabbage-head hunters, dragons, giants, pickle poppers, and more. An ogre, a fairy, and a well-meaning prince join her quest in this fairy tale that turns genre conventions upside down. A handful of black-and-white illustrations grace this fantasy novel, highly recommended for preteen girls.

Winston of Churchill: One Bear's Battle Against Global Warming is a charming children's picutrebook that addresses a serious modern social issue. Winston the polar bear of Churchill, Canada has observed that the earth is getting warmer due to human-generated pollution, and wants to mobilize his fellow bears to do something about it. "Burning gasoline in cars makes carbon dioxide. Methane gas comes from rotting garbage in landfills. Digging for oil an natural gas and mining coal lets out a gas called nitrous oxide. Too much of these gases is no good. But green plants turn carbon dioxide into oxygen, which is very good. People need to burn less gas, make less garbage, and plant more trees." However, Winston's wife notices that Winston himself contributes to global warming - by smoking a big, burning, smelly cigar! "'How can you convince people to stop doing what they're doing unless you can show that every little bit helps?' His wife glared at him. 'No cigar or I'm not going.'" Winston learns that the most persuasive way to advocate change is to change himself, and gives up his cigar to help convince humans to improve their world, in this thoughtful and motivational picturebook.
